An open letter to Mayors
You couldn’t have chosen…….
a more interesting time for public service! For the first time ever, municipal governments are facing declining revenues, increased demand for services, litigation at the drop of a hat, and a growing lack of confidence by the general public. Add to that the divisiveness of party politics plus special interest groups and you have a marvelous opportunity to step up to the plate and work with your team to make things right!
Teddy Roosevelt faced a similar situation when he took office. Fortunately, he was able to access the situation and break the business of government down into four basic areas. We thought they may be worthy of review. In essence, the responsibilities of a government leader, at least as we see it, are as follows:
To protect and serve
To administrate efficiently
To build trust and confidence
To plan for community development
For incumbents still trying to get things done and the newly elected still playing who do you trust, we thought this might be a good time for an introduction. Regardless of whether you have served multiple terms, or if this is your first term in office, one of your primary tasks is to find and select the people who can help you meet your objectives.
